What is a Midsole

What is a midsole you ask? I've mentioned it a few times around the site but haven't really explained it anywhere else. So here's the answer.

The mid-sole is the middle part of a hiking boot or shoe. It is the layer between the outer tread of the shoe on the bottom and the insole and upper parts of your shoe or boot. The midsole provides the stiffness of the shoe and can be made of a variety of materials. There is usually a combination of foam and plastic in midsoles. Some hiking boots even have metal in them to make them very stiff. For longer hikes with heavier packs you'll want a stiffer midsole to give your feet a rest from all the little bumps in the trail. A thicker, stiffer midsole does make the show heaver.
